How car import duty is calculated in Malaysia (2026)

Malaysian customs (Kastam) stacks three taxes on a reconditioned import, then age-based depreciation is applied to the FOB value before the taxes are worked out. This is the same formula our calculator and AI assistant use on every quote.

  • Import duty

30% of the CIF value (cost + insurance + freight) on a non-ASEAN CBU car

  • Excise duty

60%–105% depending on engine capacity and body type (saloon vs SUV/MPV)

  • Sales tax (SST)

10%, charged on the value after import + excise duty

  • EV (2026 rules)

    Flat 10% excise + 5% (China/ACFTA) or 30% (non-FTA) import duty — the blanket CBU EV exemption ended 31 Dec 2025

Frequently asked questions

How much is import duty on a car in Malaysia?

For a reconditioned non-ASEAN car, import duty is 30% of the CIF value, plus excise duty of 60%–105% (by engine size and body type), plus 10% SST on top. Depreciation based on the car’s age is applied to the value first, which lowers the tax on older units.

What is a recon (reconditioned) car?

A recon car is a used car imported as a complete unit (CBU) from markets like Japan, the UK or Australia. 廣男講車 is a pre-order importer: once you book, a unit from Japan typically arrives in about 6–8 weeks.

Do electric vehicles still get the import-tax exemption in 2026?

No. Malaysia’s blanket CBU EV duty and excise exemption ended on 31 December 2025. From 2026 a taxed EV pays a flat 10% excise plus a 5% (China/ACFTA) or 30% (non-FTA) import duty.

Can you import any car, or only these brands?

We can quote and source far more than what is listed. These pages cover the 42 brands and 2,300+ models already in our pricing database — if your car isn’t shown, just ask Alita or message us and we’ll price it.

Do I need an AP to import a recon car into Malaysia?

Yes. Every reconditioned import requires an Approved Permit (AP). 廣男講車 is a PEKEMA-registered AP holder, so the AP, customs clearance and JPJ registration are handled for you.

How long does importing a recon car from Japan take?

About 6–8 weeks from booking to arrival in Malaysia for a unit sourced from Japan, with sourcing, shipping, customs and registration handled end-to-end.
